As Darth Sidious’ apprentice, Darth Maul always operated in the shadows. Only during the events of Episode I was he unleashed on the Jedi. With his distinctive double-bladed (staff) lightsaber he defeated the Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn, before his own arrogance got the better of him in the duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi. The severed lightsaber kept working, though, so Maul, no longer Darth, kept it with him for the next twenty years.
