Yoda

Yoda

The wise Jedi Master’s lightsaber was used against his fallen apprentice Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus and against Darth Sidious in the final duel in the Senate chamber. There it was lost in the duel with the Emperor. Years later it resurfaced, now in the possession of Luke Skywalker, who offered it to his student Grogu.

Behind the Scenes

In the early 90s, collector Ed Maggiani was looking for possible parts for a lightsaber. Following the tradition of the original trilogy hilts, he searched for old camera flashes and found one made by Praco. As a joke, he told his friend Steve Dymszo (later the founder of Master Replicas) that because of its size, the flash would be Yoda’s lightsaber. They liked the idea, and Steve built a prototype:

  • The “clamp box” was an oil pan from a 1:12 Monogram 1967 Corvette kit
  • The emitter came from a front wheel of a 1:16 Lamborghini Countach model kit
  • Plus a 4-40 PEM threaded insert
  • Black foam for the grips

Ed later became friends with David Reynolds, who was working on the first Star Wars Visual Dictionary , and asked him whether he could include Yoda’s lightsaber in the book.

Lucasfilm ultimately didn’t allow the hilt in the book, but liked the design so much that they bought the rights to it and used it in digital form in AOTC and ROTS. And so a fan idea ended up becoming Yoda’s official lightsaber.

Is the archive incomplete?

Even though we put a lot of work into the content ourselves, we don’t know everything and don’t own every lightsaber.
