Luke Skywalker ROTJ

Luke Skywalker ROTJ

After losing Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber, along with his hand, in the duel with Darth Vader on Bespin, Luke Skywalker had to build a new lightsaber. The Jedi Master used this lightsaber for the next 30 years until his death.

Behind the Scenes

The Luke Skywalker ROTJ has a very special history, because the official “hero prop” is barely seen in the film. Instead, the stunt variants “V2” and “V3” appear in most scenes.

After principal photography wrapped, additional scenes were shot. Among them ISYHCANL, which stands for “I see you have constructed a new lightsaber”, a nod to the dialogue of the scene this prop appears in. Another is the “cave scene”, which ultimately wasn’t used in the film. It shows Luke building his lightsaber at the beginning of the film.

The Luke Skywalker ROTJ Hero is based on this prop. The prop used is in turn based on the so-called Yuma version of the hilt.

The name Yuma comes from the filming location of the sail barge scenes in ROTJ. They were shot in Buttercup Valley in the desert near Yuma, Arizona.

A metal prop was built just for these scenes, which in turn is based on the V2 and V3.

So the correct order of the sabers would be

  1. V2 & V3
    • Both based on stunt versions of the Obi-Wan Kenobi ANH
  2. Stunt B
    • Also known as the Yuma saber
    • Metal replica for additional stunt scenes
    • This was the first time a custom activator box was used instead of the Graflex clamp
  3. Luke Skywalker ROTJ Hero
    • aka cave scene aka ISYHCANL
    • The difference between the two scenes is the modified activator box
    • To this day, the ISYHCANL version is a prop that still exists and is considered the “official” Luke lightsaber
  4. Stunt C aka Resin V3, Resin Yuma, Soft Stunts
    • A resin cast based on the Yuma and used for stunt scenes

Is the archive incomplete?

Even though we put a lot of work into the content ourselves, we don’t know everything and don’t own every lightsaber.
