This July, Heritage Auctions is auctioning Mark Hamill's screen-used lightsaber from The Empire Strikes Back. Starting bid: $1,000,000.
The prop was developed by Stuart Freeborn's makeup department: a Graflex-based lightsaber, a wrist dummy made from a direct cast of Mark Hamill's hand, and a release mechanism. So no CGI was used to cut off Luke's hand.
More great news on that note: Heritage Auctions has allowed us to use their auction photos for our Lightsaber Database. So more props from their archive will follow soon.
