Anakin Skywalker’s (Hayden Christensen) stunt dueling lightsaber from George Lucas‘ Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Anakin wore and wielded his signature lightsaber in countless duels and battles throughout the prequel saga. Following his dramatic turn to the dark side of the Force and the purging of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant in ROTS, he ultimately lost the saber during his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) on the fiery planet of Mustafar.
Anakin’s legendary saber is among the most significant weapons in the Star Wars narrative. It is the same piece that an aging Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) handed to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in A New Hope, explaining that Luke’s father „feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade.“ Luke later lost the saber again, along with his hand, when Anakin revealed that he was his opponent’s father during their fateful Cloud City duel in The Empire Strikes Back.
In The Force Awakens, the saber miraculously reentered the franchise in the possession of Rey (Daisy Ridley), leading Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) to duel her for it in Grand Leader Snoke’s (Andy Serkis) throne room in The Last Jedi. The result was its final – at least, for now – destruction.
Several different styles of the distinctive saber were made in varying degrees of simplicity to aid Christensen during dueling sequences. This less-detailed stunt version was created as a copy of the Graflex-style saber Luke wielded in the original trilogy. This saber’s hilt is constructed from resin cast around a threaded metal rod and painted silver and black to appear metallic. Mounted to the rod is a green blade made of carbon fiber – a material unique to the third prequel film – and wrapped with a clear plastic sheath intended to prevent blade chips from causing injuries. The carbon fiber blade allowed the actors to duel on set, and was then digitally altered to add the lightsaber’s signature blue glow during post-production.
This stunt weapon exhibits visible signs of production use, including some nicks in the hilt, grime and scratching along the blade, and minor tears to the plastic sheath, most notably at the tip. Dimensions: 48.5″ x 2″ x 2″ (123.25 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm)
