Crystal Focus Saber Core - Electricity supply

The most important thing in choosing an electricity supply for the Crystal Focus Saber Core is the LED that is used.

If one wants to use a Luxeon 5W, one needs at least 7 Volt, better are 7,2 or 7,4 V which complies with 6 round cells R6. With a Luxeon 3W or Seoul P4 Z-LED 4 round cells R6 are necessary, which complies with 4,8V. Actually for a Luxeon or Seoul LED it is one Volt too much; however the CF regulates the intensity of current, which is given off to the LED, automatically.

When one constructs a saber one has free choice, if one uses normal battteries or accumulators.
We recommend accumulators, most suitable in connection with a recharge port, for recharging the cells faster and not have to dismount the saber over and over.

NiMH Akkus

Commercial accumulators offer a voltage of 1,2V; important for the buy is the cell's capacity (technically correct would be electric charge), that is conveyed in milliampere-hours (mAh).
An accumulator, that hat 1000mAh, is able to give off 1 ampere for one hour constantly before it is emptied. Just the same way it can give off 500mAh for two hours constantly and so on...

If a Seoul or Luxeon LED is used, the capacity should comply 2000mAh. Otherwise the intensity of current decreases too fast for the board itself consumes electricity as well. Our commendation are accumulators with 2500mAh, maybe even more.

In addition to the accumulators one needs a 4xAA battery tray that can be purchased in every electrical retailer. Advanced learner have the opportunity of buying accumulators with soldering lugs, hereby the battery tray is dropped.

Four round cells R6 can consume a lot of space in the little hilts, but are, however, recommended for Luxeon 3W and Seoul LEDs.

If one decides to use a Luxeon 5W LED, one would need to use six round cells R6. For the most hilts do not allow that one should use Lithium Ion cells (short Li-Io) for the Luxeon 5W LED.
These are used in every new mobile phone, Ipod or other technical hand-held unit. However it is difficult to get cells for FX-lightsabers. It is impossible to get simple Li-Ion cells (in the dimension of round cells R6) in the european union, for they are simply not produced - because of various conditions.
Lithium-Ionen Zellen Their import is allowed after all. One should order them from the USA or China best. Converted, two Li-Ion cells, which suit in every 2xAA round cell R6 battery tray , cost 3€, added are circa 7€ for a recharger.

Important for the purchase is that one buys so named "protected cells", that are protected from overload and discharge. One Li-Ion cell offers a capacity of 3,7V, more than thrice as much as a normal round cell R6 accumulator! Admittedly the capacity is lower and is therefore about 900mAh fot the smaller cells.
For the Luxeon 5W LED this is, however, no problem, for the Luxeon 5W needs indeed more voltage, but less electricity.

NiMH Akkus IMPORTANT ADVICE:
For beginners Lithium-Ion cells are NOT recommended! As for the soldering and mounting one needs to be far more cautiously than with normal accumulators, because Li-Ion cells do have a danger of explosion.
(It is not that these cells tend to explode, but as a beginner one should leave this stuff be;)).

Here everything in a short summary:

  • Luxeon 3W, Seoul P4 Z-LED >> 4xAA (NiMH) 2000mAh or more.
  • Luxeon 5W >> 6xAA (Mignon) 900+mAh OR Li-Ionen 2x3,7V, 900mAh
