High Power LEDs for Master Replicas Conversions
powered by: LED-TECH

In the matter of High Power LEDs one has a big offer that led to many irritations. So we put together a list of the LEDs which are a possibility with links to a German online-shop, that has also customers in the USA. If one wants to make his Master Replicas FX- Lightsaber durable using a High Power LED is the cheapest way.
We composed the best LEDs that are in the run!

You get a Mini-Review if you click at the colour; use the symbols on the right to watch pictures or videos.
On top of that there is a link that leads directly to the online shop of our sponsor LED-Tech!

Color LED Type Lumens at 700mA Options
RED Luxeon 3W 70
BLUE Seoul P4 Z-LED 19
GREEN Seoul P4 Z-LED 91
CYAN Luxeon 3W 64
AMBER Luxeon 3W 70

Lumens:
Lumen is the unit that describes luminous fluxes.
Since light consists of waves one can measure these fluxes. Who wants to knot more about lumens and its calculations can search Wikipedia ;)
It is important to know, that you can’t compare different colours by their lumens!
Same colours can be compared, so one can compare a red Luxeon 3W to a red Luxeon 5W etc.

Resistors:
To each LED there should be wired a resistor to safe the lifespan of the LED.
We don’t use them, since the difference is very small but the LED gets much brighter.
The lifespan will be shortened, but this will not disturb, here an example:

A LED has a lifespan of about 100000 hours, equals 11,4 years of permanent usage. Without the resistor the lifespan of the LED will be reduced to about 30000 hours, almost a quarter of the original.
We assume that the saber is not activated all the time, but “only” 14 hours a week. That’s a lot, almost no one has his saber activated 2 hours a day.
14 hours a week multiplied with 52 weeks a year equal 728 hours a year. Since we reduced the lifespan to 30000 hours, we divide 30000 hours with 728 hours a year that makes a lifespan of rounded off 41 years!!

Further advice about overdriving:
Since the LED is ran with more than the recommended current it gets hotter, what decreases the lifespan!

On top of the LEDs one needs for a conversion of a Master Replicas saber a lense and a lensholer, a heatsink and a heat transportion glue or pads.
There are available at LED-Tech also, here a table:

Supplies Measures in mm Link
Carclo Lense Holder 21x22x14
Carclo Plugin Lense 20x20x10
Massive Heatsink 20x20x50
Heat Conductive Pads Ø20
Heat Conductive Glue

NOTE:
NOTE One can saw the heatsink into 5 similar pieces and use for 5 conversions.
The heat condictive glue or -pads bond the LED to the heatsink.
