Obi-Wan Kenobi ROTS Force FX Lightsaber with removable blade (2010)
First Impression:
In comparison with the forerunner model by Hasbro and Master Replicas the lacquering strikes the eye first. The two parts above the emitter do not have the golden design anymore but a brown color instead. Therefore the saber loses parts of its charisma and authenticity and one needs some time to get used to the new coloring. Otherwise the saber is manufactured quite well and equals its forerunner models.
Handling:
The saber is balanced well and suits all kinds of tricks and trained show combats. While doing faster tricks and fights one does not slip off the hilt, because of the disc shaped emitter. So this saber is appropriate especially for beginners as well. The clamp may be distracting at the beginning, but with a bit of practice one gets used to it very quickly.
Light and Sound:
Like its forerunners the FX-lightsaber glows in a very nice and bright blue. What distinguishes this saber from the other models is the removable blade. The blade is held within the hilt by the emitter and can be removed by unscrewing the emitter. When the blade is detached one can place a little part into the emitter, which indicates the blade emitter and makes the saber even look more authentically. With the sound, Hasbro has come along with a quite new thing as well: The board now has totally new moving- and clash-sounds and even the "energy-buzzing" has been changed. The sounds are essentially louder (CF-volume!), more intensive and true to the original than all forerunners. When switching on the saber while the blade is still removed, another sound appears which makes the saber sound defect like with a short circuit. This way one really enjoys the new saber and especially the sounds. The saber runs with 3 AAA batteries. The battery pack still has (like in all former models) a plastic cover over the batteries, which needs to be unscrewed when changing the batteries.
Abrasion:
For the saber is manufactured so well, there is not much to criticize. When using the saber very often, the golden plate on the clamp unfortunately fades and the yellow plastic underneath emerges.
Conclusion:
The Obi Wan fits the hand well and is very robust. Through the design and the allocation of weight it is not only a great saber for beginners. It is an enrichment for anybody, because of the new technology and the new sounds. No matter if one is a collector or a fighter, the Obi Wan surely is worth the purchase.
