The function of a lightsaber

Dooku Hilt ROTS Some functions differ from hilt to hilt, since everyone has his own visions and focuses building his sabre. So not all sabres have a possibility to adjust its length/ thickness or energy/power. The external also may vary: Some hilts are made for one hand, as e.g. Darth Sidious one. Mace Windu, Anakin and Luke Skywalker built their sabres for two hands. Exotics are double bladed lightsabers, as the one Darth Maul used. So three different fight forms result, independent from the sabres interior.

Despite different constructions all sabres work the same way:
Inside the hilt there is an energy cell and one to three multifaceted Adegan-Crystals. These focus the cells energy, so it exits through the emitter at the top end of the hilt as one meter long parallel light and energy beam. Since the blade is a closed energy circle and the weapon only loses energy hitting other objects the small cell doesn’t need to be changed for years. Every lightsaber has its own frequency, which causes its colour and the hum-sound, that is generated by the interaction between energy and surrounding air. A lightsaber with only one crystal has a fix amplitude regulating the length of the blade. Using more crystals the amplitude and with this the blade-length can be changed. Through installing a second emitter at the other end of the hilt another blade can be created, which can be used with the first one. But it requires great precision to fight with such a weapon, as the danger to hurt you is huge.

The only differences are the hilt itself and the blade’s colour. This is regulated by a crystal, which every fighter used his way. Adegan Kristalle

In the films there are following colours:

Jedi : green , blue and purple
Sith : red

Kristalle The difference to the sith-sabers is, that the crystals are created synthetic in opposite to the Jedi, who are searching for natural crystals on diverse planets. On top of the fact that the crystals are responsible for the colour of the blades, most of them have different characteristics when activating the saber. In the Expanded Universe there are other crystals, which show for example a different colour range.
